October 10, 2008 - Texoma - Submitted by Southern Oklahoma Guides - Cooling water temperatures this time of year ushers in the Fall fishing season. For at least the next two months the fish will congregate in larger and larger schools. Finding the fish during this season is aided by the migratory sea gulls which have already started to arrive. We are already catching fish on live shad. Down-riggers will begin to catch fish as the schools become larger. Casting jigs such as sassy shads and road runners into the schools will also produce fish.

August 10, 2008 - Lower Illinois - FISHING AT THE LOWER ILLINOIS IS THE WORST I'VE EVER SEEN IT. THE WATER IS FINALLY LOW ENOUGH TO FISH IT BUT ALL THE TROUT SEEM TO BE DYING. THE WATER IS REAL CLOUDY AND STINKS BAD AT THE DAMN SOMETHING SEEMS TO HAVE GOTTEN IN THE WATER.

July 2, 2008 - Texoma - Submitted by Southern Oklahoma Guides - Top-water fishing for stripers is just starting to kick off. I am seeing many schools of small fish on top now, so, it is just a matter of a few days that the better keepers will be on the surface also. Various baits will work, but, the bait needs to have a hair or translucent tail on the rear treble hook. The fish are feeding on threadfin shad fry, not mature shad. The dressed treble hook replicates the fry. When the dressing comes off the rear hook as it has a tendency to do after catching several fish, I immediately give my clients a new bait. My favorite baits include the salt-water series chug bug, the cordell pencil popper, and any wind cheater/near nuthin type sinking top water bait.

Of course, when the fish go down they can be caught vertical spooning and on down riggers. By the way, we have pulled several 14 lb. class fish on live shad during the past week.

Photo of Lake Texoma StriperMay 25, 2008 - Texoma - Submitted by Southern Oklahoma Guides - Fishing is good on Lake Texoma, though not as good as we typically expect this time of year. The fishing can be great one day and average the next. The stripers can be found at various depths of water so it is difficult to pattern the fish consistently. I have fished in water all the way from 2 feet to 50 feet this month. When fishing in shallow water we have also been catching a lot of real nice white bass and smallmouth bass. In fact several trophy class smallmouth have been taken in the past couple of weeks. If you plan a trip in the next couple of weeks, I believe that the pattern will begin to stabilize in deep water.

Live shad has been the bait of preference, however, topwaters and sassy shads are producing well in shallow water.

February 10, 2008 - Texoma - Submitted by Southern Oklahoma Guides - The picture is of Steve Frederick of Wichita, KS. We went on our first long-lining trip of the season today and pulled several nice fish. We did the best on ledges adjacent to deep water. The fish do not seem to be on our flats where we traditionally like to long-line. Of course, this is relatively early in the season and the water temperature is still only 47 degrees. Look for the fishing to really improve as the water temperature climbs into the lower fifties during the next few weeks. We were using deep-diving thundersticks running in 20-25 feet of water. Live shad is also producing a mixture of stripers and white bass.

January 1, 2008 - Kaw - Submitted by Mike Cook - Four Lake Guides - New Years Day at Kaw reservoir. Wellllllllll, it started real good, once I chiseled the ice from my drain hole for the boat and lubed the steering shaft with w-d-40 cause the grease was so stiff.

The wind was up too much for me to anchor at the first spot I wanted to fish. Pulling those cold wet icy anchor ropes in was, well should have hired a guide. The second spot I caught 6 nice crappie before the wind blew me off the brush pile that was in 25 foot of water. The third spot produced no fish. The fourth spot, despite the cold water I decided to set out 3 anchors in hopes of holding me over the brush pile without getting blown off. It worked but I still had to contend with the boat moving a lot more than I wanted it to and the crappie rods having an east west bend in them like they had 8 ounce sinkers on them. I caught several more nice crappie under these less than ideal conditions before crying uncle.

Also in attendance sailing the currents overhead at Sarge Creek were three mature bald eagles that were beautiful to observe on the blustery day. So all in all and to put it in a nutshell and all that. IT WAS COLD AND WINDY! See ya soon.

Mike
