Famed Antique Lure Collector to Appear
at BASS Masters Classic Outdoor Show
NEW ORLEANS, La.---July 25, 2001---
Karl White has compiled such a large selection of antique lures and tackle that it will take a diesel truck to bring his selected items to the 2001 BASS Masters Classic Outdoor Show, Aug. 2-4, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

"Karl White is recognized as one of the foremost authorities on antique lures, tackle, boats and motors," said Dave Precht, Editor of BASSMASTER Magazine."His lure collection is one of the largest in the world."

"I practically have everything that exists in terms of antique fishing gear," said White, who has been a collector of antique tackle for 53 years.

He has acquired a collection of over 20,000 items worth more than $4 million. Much of his collection will be on display at next week's outdoor show.

One prized possession is the very first bass fishing boat. The 1949 Skeeter wooden bass boat will be on display and will be fully rigged complete with a matching Mercury Motor, tackle box, and rod and reel. All of these items are from the same era and White says, "it will be just like fishing in 1949."

Other anticipated attractions are the first three lures from every major maker, the first electric engine, the first plug ever sold and the most expensive tackle item ever sold at a public auction in the United States, a Snyder Reel, valued at $31,000.

"Sporting antiques are the most sought after antiques for fans because it takes them back to the past." White also states that collecting these items is important because "it is impossible to determine where things are headed, if we do not know where we have been."

This is White's third appearance at the BASS Masters Classic Outdoor Show and visitors can expect to see the evolution of fishing. His exhibition will show the progression of bass fishing and how far the sport has matured in the past century.

Aside from White's personal collection, everyone is encouraged to bring in their antique fishing gear for free appraisal.

"White's column in BASSMASTER Magazine, What's it Worth? is one of the most popular regular features," says Precht. His book, Fishing Tackle Antiques & Collectibles, is the premier reference source for information about vintage tackle, a rapidly growing segment of the nation's collector market.

The BASS Masters Classic Outdoor show will be held in conjunction with the weigh-ins for the first two days of the Classic at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. "It will add a new dimension to both the Classic Outdoor Show and the weigh-in to have both events in the same facility," said Dave Ellison, Classic Special Events Director. "It will make the first two weigh-ins more exciting than ever."

ESPN2 will showcase the 2001 BASS Masters Classic during each day of competition with same-day coverage on Thursday, August 2nd and Friday August 3rd taking place from 6 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. (Eastern). ESPN2 will also provide live updates on Saturday, August 4th, from 7 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. as well as covering the final weigh-in from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
