Updates from
Wichita's year 'round tackle store

Notes from Jim Zeiner
Serving anglers since 1953

Saturday-March 31, 2007 - 9:53 am - We've been getting good reports on walleye at Cheney and El Dorado off the dam. This time of the year things heat up for a while during the pre-spawn and spawning season. Stick baits are the lure of choice for many of the anglers. We've placed another order for Vicious line. In addition to the 250-yard spools of Flourocarbon, we are adding 550-yard spools. We hope to receive the order toward the end of next week.

Thursday-March 29, 2007 - 4:55 pm - I just received an email from Doug Nygren, Fisheries section Chief of the Kansas department of Wildlife and Parks. At 5:00 today, the Largemouth Bass Management Plan will be posted on the KDWP website. There is also a "blog topic" where the public can post their comments and weigh-in on the plan. Here are the links to those sites.

He would like to spread the word. Let others know about this.

Monday-March 26, 2007 - 8:52 pm - The highways are busy to Oklahoma as anglers head there to snag spoonbill. I just posted a story and a couple photographs on the Kansas Angler Reports from Oklahoma Anglers. Click here to see some nice spoonbill. If you need equipment and supliesosagng, be sure to drop by. I would venture to say we have the best selection in town.

Saturday-March 24, 2007 - 11:15 am - I just posted a story from the state on trout permits being required for anglers fishing waters the state stocks trout in. Effective January 1, a trout permit is required even if an angler is not fishing for trout in those waters. You can read the complete story by clicking here. I must have missed it when I looked at changes in regulations for this year. It could be bad news if a person wasn't aware of it and got caught fishing one on the trout stocked waters.

We continue to receive new merchandise. For those of you that are Gene Larew fans, we have a number of discontinued colors in the Salt Craws. We also have a few left of a special run of electric blue with white claw. We also have some of the 8" hook tail worms in the same color.

Remember, when you're looking for something and can't find, to check with us. We will do our best to find it for you.

Saturday-March 17, 2007 - 6:52 pm - Our sympathy goes out to Steve White and his family. Steve's wife Nancy passed away about a week ago and her services were on Wednesday. Deb and I were unable to attend because Deb had an operation on Tuesday. Steve and Nancy operated a couple bass tournament circuits through the 80s and 90s. We had the pleasure to meet Nancy through our participation in those circuits. She and Steve worked hard through those years and at the same time raised some great kids. We always admired their devotion to family and fishing.

What a week this was. More new merchandise arriving and more people gettng ready for spring fishing. We received some national publicity this month in The Fishing Tackle Trade News. That's a trade publication that goes to fishing tackle stores, manufacturers and others involved in the fishing tackle industry. We were one of three independent dealers featured in an article about websites for small independent dealers. The other two were Brannan's Bass Shop in Texas and Scott's Bait & Tackle in New Jersy. I asked the writer how he happened to contact us and he said he had asked for suggestions from distributors and manufacturers and then looked at the suggested sites. A couple years ago, we were featued in in a nice article in the same publication as their independent dealer of the month.

Saturday-March 10, 2007 - 9:20 pm - After a couple of special event Saturdays, it was nice to have a little more relaxed day today. We were still busy, but had more time to talk with people. Most everyone seems anxious to get started fishing again. Trout fishing continues to be strong since the ice cleared. Trout anglers lost a couple months of fishing that they had last year. We continue to get new merchandise in and move things around. If you're a crappie angler, come in and check out the tackle and lures we have for you.

We've added 100 count bags of Swim Tails to our regular stock. We decided we should do that because so many of our customers buy them by the 100s and that used to mean a trip to the backroom and a lot of counting. Now we have them ready to go. It's always interesting to talk to Swim Tail customers that buy in large quantities. Some are crappie anglers, others are after wipers or walleye. I've caught everything except carp on them. A couple weeks ago, I talked to a customer that had caught carp on them. They are a great bait to jig with or to cast and retreive. They are really effective with a jig spinner added.

If you're a bass angler that would like to get involved in the BASS Weekend Series, but you don't have a boat or want to use your boat, we have a customer that plans to fish the series as a boater. He would ike to find a non-boater interested in fishing the series. The dates this year are April 22, June 10, June 24 and July 16 with the Division Championship August 26-27.

You wouldn't be fishing with him as the non-boater, your name would be drawn and assigned to another boater. The way the tournament works, if a boater wants to be sure he is going to be able to compete as a boater, he has to bring a non-boater. If there are more boaters than non-boaters, the names of boaters (that did not bring a non-boater) go into a drawing to determine who will be boaters and who will have the back of the boat.

If you're interested in finding out more, contact Mike Combs evenings and weekend at 942-4595.

Saturday-March 3, 2007 - 9:20 pm - Thanks to all of you that made it by for our second Special Saturday. It was pretty much non-stop most of the day. This was probably one of the best in-store promotion days we've ever had. As the clock hit 5:00 we had Mike Simpson of Crappie Magic draw for the winner of the free guided trip with Mike Cook of Four Lake Guides. Mitchell Johnston of Wichita was the winner. I gave him a call a little after the drawing. He was pleased to say the least. I'll bet he and his guest have a great time with Mike. Last year's winner and his guest had a blast.

Even though they weren't in the store, we had a good day on internet sales also, especially on some closeout items we have in stock. You can see them on our shopping cart by clicking here. Bookmark our closeout page and check back once in a while. We will be using it more this year as we make room for new merchandise this year.

Friday-March 2, 2007 - 2:40 pm - Remember to come by tomorrow to visit with Mark Kirkpatrick (a field staffer for Vicious), Crappie Guide Mike Simpson and vintage lure collector Bob Wallace. In addition to them, Neal Hall of Classic Destiny Custom Rods will be in the store talking about his custom made rods. Also, some of our old time customres called Deb and harassed her into coming down for the day to visit. We've been having a number of calls today about tomorrow. Should be a bunch of people in and out to visit with everyone. Remember to bring your old lures or tackle to have Bob Wallace look at them and give you some history or values. Last, but not least, remember to register for the free guided trip with Wichita Guide Mike Cook of four lake guides.

Sunday-February 25, 2007 - 9:12 pm - Another Bassmaster Classic is in the books now. Deb and I were both pretty excited after the second day and Kevin VanDam was in the lead. Early in his career he was one of the presenters for BASS University in Wichita. Deb was the Wichita coordinator for the seminars. VanDam was a "kid" that talked about spinnerbaits. He finished in third this time around, but widened his lead over Denny Brauer as the highest all-time money maker.

Two of the Vicious Line Elite Team members finished in the top 25. Jason Quinn finished in ninth and Russ Lane finished in 25th. Vicious is a new line we started carrying this year that has already outsold all of our other lines combined this past month.

You can read about the classic by going to Kansas Angler Online.

Saturday-February 24, 2007 - 9:56 pm - Thanks to all of you that made it in today for our first of two "Special Saturdays." It started a little slow in the early morning. I was afraid the weather was so nice everyone decided to just get outdoors and enjoy it. But then around 11:30 it started getting busy and it stayed that way through the rest of the day. Mike Cook and Curt Graves both said they enjoyed talking with everyone and they had a good time. That's what it's all about. We had a lot of interest in the new Vicious Line. Mark Kirkpatrick (he'll be in the store next Saturday) took a bunch of the Vicious Line to Chanute with him and sold out of the Ultimate and nearly out of the flourocarbon. I'll be calling the factory to get our second order on the way so we have more in time for next Saturday when Kirkpatrick (a field staffer for Vicious), Crappie Guide Mike Simpson and vintage lure collector Bob Wallace will be in the store. Be sure to mark it on your calendar and come see us. Many of the customers today said, "See you next Saturday," as they were leaving. Come join them then.

Saturday-February 24, 2007 - 9:00 am - Getting ready for the day with Mike Cook and Curt Graves in the store from 10 till 4 to visit with people about fishing. If you're out running around after the rain we got last night, stop by and say hi. While you're in the store, be sure to register for the free guided trip with Mike Cook.

Monday-February 19, 2007 - 2:03 pm - Thanks to all of you that visited us at the Kansas Sports Boat and Travel Show. We got to talk to a ton of people. It's always fun to visit with everyone. Remember to mark your calendar for the next couple Saturdays and save some time to come in and visit with the folks we will have in the store. Wichita Guide Mike Cook and tournament angler Curt Graves will be in the store this coming Saturday. Starting today and running through March 3, we will be registering people for a drawing for a free guided trip with Cook. The following Saturday, March 3 we will have crappie guide and the owner of Crappie Magic Mike Simpson in the store along with Mark Kirkpatrick and Bob Wallace. Kirkpatrick is a tournament angler and on the field staff of several companies. He will be talking fishing and about Vicious line with customers. Bob Wallace is a vintage tackle collector and will have a display of vintage tackle. He will also look at tackle you bring in and give you some history on it and an estimate of its value if you're interested. He also buys vintage tackle if you have some you are wanting to sell. Be sure to come see us on the next two Saturdays.

Saturday-February 17, 2007 - 7:33 am - Day three of the Kansas Sports Boat and Travel Show is here. I'm about ready to head that way now. I enjoyed the first two days as I talked with many of our customers and other people. Antique lure collecter Bob Wallace will be in our booth (number 42) today with a display of antique lures. Stop by and chat with him and take a look. Also remember our wall full of bargins with our buy one get one free offer. To sweeten the deal even more, if you buy $10 in Berkley products, you will get a coupon for a $5 mail in rebate. That's a real deal!!

We have the new Vicious line in the booth also or you can swing by the store and see my son Ben today and let him fix you up with some.

Wednesday-February 14, 2007 - 7:46 pm - Just got back from setting up a booth at the Sports Boat and Travel Show. We decided to do a booth a few weeks ago. It's been several years since we've been there, so we decided to head back. Don't expect anything big like we had back when we were doing 10 booths. We're just doing a single booth so we can meet folks. If you want to save some money, come out and see us. We're bringing in new products this year and need room in the store, so we made a decision about what to close out and we've taken it to the show. All the closeout merchandise is buy one and get one free. That's 50% off. We will have Vicious Line at the show to introduce it. Stop by and say hi. We are in booth 42. If you are interested in old lures, come by Saturday. Bob Wallace, a vintage lure collector and appraiser will be in the booth. He will also be in our store on Saturday, March 3.

Tuesday-February 13, 2007 - 10:16 am - We just discovered that some of our emails to zeiners.com were note being forwarded. When we investigated further, we discovered that our site was down. We have that corrected and everything should be working fine now. If you tried emailing us at zeiner.com and it bounced back, it wasn't you - it was us. I'm sorry for any inconvenience.

Thursday-February 8, 2007 - 2:48 pm - Just finished the spring issue of The Kansas Angler. If you're one of the many people that receive it in the mail, keep your eyes open for it. It will be mailed Friday so some people will start receiving it on Saturday. Others will receive it next week. It will have a coupon that's good for an $8.00 savings when you buy two adult tickets. If you don't receive The Angler, stop by the store next week and pick up a copy and use the coupon. Every coupon that's used helps support The Angler because the show management monitors the number of coupons they receive. We may have some copies of The Angler later in the day Friday if we are able to get out and get them picked up.

We've also received our first shipment of Vicious Line. This is a new line for us and I think it will be well received. The flourocarbon line is very competatively priced. The Ultimate series is in a 660-yard spool that's packed in a box that serves as a winding station. It's a neat idea. The box has an opening on one side that the line can feed through for spooling casting reels and another hole on the end for spinning reels. Check them out the next time you're in.

Monday-January 29, 2007 - 7:33 pm - We have our spring St. Croix order in. Come in and check out one of the finest rods money can buy. If you've felt like you budget didn't fit St. Croix rods, be sure to check out the Triump series they introduced last year. They start at $60 and carry a five-year warranty. That's hard to beat. Probably the most popular rod St. Croix builds is the Premier Series. We have a good selection of casting and spinning. We even have some two-piece models which are hard to find in a quality rod. New merchandise is arriving on a regular basis. We should have the new Johnny Morris reels later this week as well as the full compliment of Extremes, probably one of the best values in reels today. Match your Extreme reel up with an extreme rod and you have a combination that you can be proud of. Other Bass Pro model reels are also on the way. Come in and see us.

Wednesday-January 24, 2007 - 12:35 pm - Just finished updating the Kansas fishing reports on The Kansas Angler Online website. It should come as no surprise that fishing is a bit slow. Starting to get a few ice fishing reports. Had a number of calls for ice fishing equipment and supplies the first couple days of the week. If you're looking for a power auger, we can still order you one. I have one on the way for someone now and the distributor still has a few left. We don't have any augers in stock, but if you have a hand auger and would like to have a power auger, we have a low priced alternative for you. Check it out. For not much money, you can save a lot of effort.

Saturday-January 20, 2007 - 10:53 am - Hats off to Mike Edringtonn of Olathe for his 16th place finish in the BASS Federation Nation Championship that ended yesterday. A field of 54 hopeful Classic anglers competed. Royce Dennington from Oklahoma won the tournament. Central region placed third. You can read the complete story by clicking here.

I understand it's snowing big time in Wichita. We don't have any yet in Cottonwood Falls, but it's on the way I guess. The nice weather we had Thursday and Friday was welcome. We were pretty busy at the Wichita store as people quit staying so close to the fire.

Wednesday-January 17, 2007 - 4:54 pm - Just finished updating fishing reports on the Kansas Angler Online site. This cold snap has slowed things down a bit except for anticipation by ice fishing fans. If you decide to go ice fishing, be sure to test the ice. We don't need anyone falling through. Remember to come by and check out the rack of free magazines if you're thinking you may want to stay in for a while. If you have any old fishing magazines you don't want any more, bring them by so someone else can enjoy them. We also have the 2007 Gear Guide from Fly Fish America. They're free also. Check out the contents.

Saturday-January 13, 2007 - 12:54 pm - What a day to stay inside. I'm in Cottonwood Falls today. Called the Wichita store and talked with Alex. He said people have been stocking up on things to keep them occupied while they are stuck inside. If you need something to do, how about making your own lures? We have what you need. If you're just getting started, check out our kits from Do-It. Something else I'm excited about is some new jig hooks we have in stock now. If you pour jigs on a 570 style Eagle Claw but wish you could find a stronger hook, we have them. We have two styles that should fill the bill for you. Our customers that make football jigs and roundhead jigs really like them. One is from Gamakatsu and the other is a Matzou. The Gamakatsu is the traditional round bend while the Matzou is a sickle bend. Come check them out. We're open until 5:00 today and closed Sunday.

Tuesday-January 9, 2007 - 10:06 am - A customer brought in a box full of magazines for our free magazine rack yesterday afternoon. He had quite a few Bassmasters as well as catfish and crappie magazines. If you want something to read this weekend, stop by and pick some out. The price is right, they're free. If you have any old fishing related magazines you are thinking of throwing away, bring them by and we'll put them on the rack for others to enjoy.

Monday-January 8, 2007 - 12:22 pm - We've received some great kits for people wanting to get started making their own sinkers or lures. These kits are from Do-It, the leading manufacturer of lead molds. We have kits for pouring roundhead jigs, bank sinkers or egg sinkers. Each of these kits include everything you need to get started and a DVD to show you how. We also have a kit for making weedless bass jigs and another for making spinnerbaits. Check them out.

Wednesday-January 3, 2007 - 5:05 pm - I hope you had a safe and sane New Year's. Deb and I were married on January 1, so every New Year's eve, it's wait until midnight and then try to be the first one to give the other one an anniversary gift. Problem is, the older you get the harder it is to stay up until midnight. We closed the store in Cottonwood Falls on Sunday and took our annual anniversary drive to see some friends of ours. That was nice.

We had a busy day at the Wichita store yesterday. We had to play catch-up on internet orders in addition to helping all the customers that came into the store. Seems to be a lot of people trout and crappie fishing.
