Notes from Jim Zeiner
Serving anglers since 1953

Monday-June 30, 2008 - 8:48 am - Kansan Brent Chapman took home $16,000, including $1,000 for day four big bass, for his seventh place finish in the Bassmaster Elite Series event held this past weekend. You can read more about the tournament by clicking here.

As we close out this month, I want to thank everyone for another great month. We saw a number of new faces this month. We have a couple new staff members that joined us this month. Next time you're in, say hi to Levi and Leroy.

We will be closed on July 4 but reopen on Saturday, July 5.

Saturday-June 28, 2008 - 5:08 pm - Matt King of Olathe was the highest placing (12) Kansan in the just completed Central Regional for BASS Federation Nation and will represent Kansas later this year in the national event to be held at Milford. He's probably going to feel some extra pressure since many will feel like he's fishing on his home lake. Jamie Laiche of Louisiana will be gunning for the top spot though. He was the winner of the regional event held in South Dakota this week. It's the second straight time he's won the event. The Kansas team placed fourth in the team competition this year. One Kansan fished on the Oklahoma team. They won the team competition for the third time in four years. You can read complete coverage by clicking here.

Saturday-June 21, 2008 - 11:12 am - Catfish are going wild according to a number of our customers. We had people stocking up on catfishing tackle yesterday. If you fish for catfish, you should be able to find what you need when you come in the store. If you're a flathead angler and looking for large circle hooks, we have them up through around 14/0. Anglers that use Sonny's dip bait can find it in 15-ounce jars, 45-ounce tubs and 5-gallon pails. If you like to do bank lines or trotlines, you can find all of your supples for that also.

Bass anglers have been giving our new shipment of Norman SX lures the thumbs up. The SX is Norman's answer to the Sexy Shad from Strike King. Several of our customers have commented that they think the SX looks even better. The color is available in SX, SX Clear, SX Chrome and SX Chartreuse. Stop by and see them. We stock them in the DD14, DD22, Deep Little N and Thin N.

Sunday-June 15, 2008 - 1:05 pm - Preston Frazell of Kincaid moved up one spot in the last day of competition for co-anglers the Bassmaster Elite Series Event on Kentucky Lake to finish in seventh place. Two other Kansans finished well. Kevin Savely of Liberal caught the big bass of day three and finished in 12th place while Michael Neal of Dexter finished 13th. It's great to see Kansans do so well in that series. If you would like to read the complete story, you can do that by clicking here.

Saturday-June 14, 2008 - 2:34 pm - Preston Frazell of Kincaid jumped to eighth place in the co-angler division of the Bassmaster Elite Series Event on Kentucky Lake. Michael neal of Dexter slipped from fifth to 11th. He's only one ounce out of tenth. You can read the story by clicking here

Thursday-June 12, 2008 - 9:05 pm - Michael Neal of Dexter is the fifth place co-angler after the first day of the Bassmaster Elite Series Event on Kentucky Lake. Two other Kansans are in the top 40 while Brent Chapman is 22nd on the pro side, less than a pound out of the top 12. The top 12 fish the final day for the big bucks. You can read the story by clicking here

Thursday-June 12, 2008 - 3:49 pm - If you like to handfish for flathead, you're in luck. The season starts this Sunday and runs through the end of August. You probably know the details, but if you don't you can check them out by clicking here.

Wednesday-June 11, 2008 - 5:28 pm - Sorry I haven't posted for a while. It's been absolutely wild around the store. Before I forget it, we are out of the Skeet Reese reels I mentioned in my previous post. Last I heard, it would be close to October before any more would be available.

We continue to receive merchandise and are working as fast as possible to get it put out. We have plenty of trotline and limbline supplies again. We've also restocked on our other terminal tackle including the hard-to-find black swivels.

If you are a heavy user of Sonny's dip bait, you may want to get in and pick up a five-gallon bucket of it before they are all gone. We still have some of the original and some of the blooded left, but not much. We sell it over the internet also, and have been shipping some of them out. We have an internet special on the Sonny's by the case and will honor that price in the store if you mention it to us. A case of 4 tubs is $39.99. That makes it $10 a tub. You will save around $8 that way.

Come on in and see us.

Friday-May 30, 2008 - 5:19 pm - Chances are you've heard about the Skeet Reese special design Abu Garcia REVO reel. He won the 2007 Bassmaster Classic fishing with REVOs. A very limited number of the reels have been released to independent dealers in this region. We've received some in both the left and right hand retrieve. You can click here to learn more about the reel. My understanding is that once the ones we have are gone, it will be several months before any more will be available.

Something else you might be interested in would be some crankbaits we just got in. A customer is trying to pare down on his fishing tackle. We got about 200 assorted crankbaits ranging from top water to deep divers. Some have never been used while others have. Among they are some of the original Hot' n Tots and Thundersticks from Storm. All of the lures except for some striper size baits are priced at $3.50 each. Come in and take a look at them.

Thursday-May 29, 2008 - 5:33 pm - Chances are you've heard about a possible new state record largemouth bass. The sate has finally released information about the catch. You can read that story by clicking here. Only a few more days remain until it goes on the record books. The old record had stood for a number of years. We've had some positive feedback on Alex's fishing reports from the Wichita area. If you haven't checked them out yet, you can see them by clicking here.

If you happen to be home Saturday morning, tune in to Paul White's gardening and outdoor living show on Channel 49 at 11:00 and you can see his interview with Alex and me. Paul is the owner of P & P Seed and Bait on East 21st Street. He had a radio program for a number of years before moving to television. He features local fishing information each week. His program is an hour with the current program featured from 11:00 until 11:30 and then the previous week's program from 11:30 until noon.

Channel 49 is a UHF station which means you need a UHF antenna to receive it. If you haven't watched Channel 49, check it out. They may have some programming you would be interested in.

Friday-May 23, 2008 - 9:40 am - Most of our regular customers know Alex fishes the Wichita area almost all the time. I've been after him for a long time to give me regular reports so we could post them for people. He finally went fishing with a friend that had a camera. We've set up a page for his reports and will try to do frequent updates with photos as often as possible. He has fished the various park lakes and other waters within the city limits for long time and continues to do so. His enthusiasm is contagious as he tells customers about his trips. You can see his first report by clicking here.

Monday-May 19, 2008 - 6:05 am - Jerry Reed's old song "When you're hot, you're hot" pretty well described Fred Roumbanis of Bixby, Oklahoma over the last couple days in the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament on South Carolina's Lake Murray. He had the lead after the third day and held on to it on the final day with the help of the big bass of the day. He's taking home $101,000 for his efforts. Two other Oklahoma anglers were in the top five.

Memorial Day is next Monday. We will be closed that day. I hope you will be off work too and out enjoying some fishing.

Sunday-May 18, 2008 - 12:05 pm - Kansan Brent Chapman didn't make the top 12 for the day four competition in the Bassmaster Elite Series event, but he did take home $10,000 for his finish in the top 50. His dad also finished in the top 50 co-anglers.

On another note, those of you that are regular customers may have noticed a trailer in front of the store for the past couple months. We had been using it to store some odds and ends in while we reorganized the back room. Friday night someone decided they wanted the trailer and cut the lock on it a took it with them. If you happen to see it or remember seeing it going down the street, give me a call with any information you might have. It's an 8-foot enclosed trailer with no fenders and a new trailer jack stand with wheel. It was light in color with some minor dents around the bottom and a small puncture hole in one of the back doors.

Saturday-May 17, 2008 - 10:25 am - How's this for nice Kansas weather and on a weekend to boot. Kansan Brent Chapman jumped from 42nd to 24th after the second day of the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament being held at Lake Murray in South Carolina. His dad, Ron, was 12th on the co-angler side after the first day. He slipped down a few places yesterday. You can see the story of day two by clicking here.

I'll be doing a special order from Pradco Monday. If you or anyone you know needs any Cordell, Rebel, Yum, Heddon, Arbogast, XCalibur, Lazy Ike, Smithwick, Bomber, Creek Chub, Silver Thread or Booyah; give me a call Monday morning at the store (316-265-5551 or 316-265-6668) and I'll get it added in.

We haven't had a chance to talk about them yet or get them online, but we have the Bass-a-holic shirts and hats now. Come in and check them out. They're still in the boxes, but we can dig them out and show them to you. They way they're selling, we may not have a chance to get them displayed.

For those of you that fish for crappie, we received a great selection of the Garland crappie baits. These were a hot item last year and no doubt will be again this year. We've also received another order of Berkley Hollow Belly Swim Baits and the new Premiere reels.

Come in and check us out.

Wednesday-May 14, 2008 - 1:33 pm - If you're headed for the River festival tomorrow through Sunday, be sure to hit First and Waco and see the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks 3,200-gallon mobile aquarium. The have a variety of fish including a 25-pound channel catfish. You can also register to win a framed laremouth bass print by nationally-acclaimed artist Mark Susinno. You can read more about it by clicking here.

Tuesday-May 13, 2008 - 10:30 am - Three days left for snagging season in Kansas. Chetopa is flowing at four times what's needed to get fish up to there. If you enjoy snagging and have some time, you might want to make the trip to southeast Kansas for one last outing this season. They rank the snagging as good. All the water this spring has been good for catfishing also as it brings fish upstream. Most dams and spillways have been busy with anglers.

We received another order of the Berkly Hollow Body swimbaits late last week. We also have a good supply of the Bass Magic in all three sizes. We have the hooks you need for them also. Thanks to all of you that have been coming in and ordering over the internet. Business was great in April and May is continuing that. We continue to get in merchandise. The problem we're having is where to hang it.

Come see us.

Sunday-May 11, 2008 - 11:45 am - Those of you that visited our store promotion after the 2007 Kansas Sport Boat & Travel Show may remember talking with tournament angler Curt Graves that day. Last weekend he won the Central Pro-Am event on Table Rock after placing second in the ABA tournament on big hill a couple weeks earlier. He has a log on the Kansas Angler Online website. Click here if you'd like to see what he was fishing on those two events.

Tuesday-May 6, 2008 - 9:05 pm - Hats off to a couple of our regular customers for placing second this past weekend in the 21st Annual Shriners Tournament held on Truman Lake. The paragraph below is from the report on the tournament on 24/7 Outdoors website.

"The second place team and winner of a fully rigged Lund boat powered by Mercury was boat 168 Dr Earl Malone and Dr Tim Wilbeck with a total weight of 34.70 pounds. Earl and Tim said they made a trip way up the Pomme to boat their fish. They said they were using black and blue jigs in 4-7 foot of water. They keyed in on secondary points. Earl and Tim said they went through 10 keepers on Saturday and 7 on Sunday. They are sponsored by Wilbeck Chiropractic, Rotten Ronnie Baits, and Rush (the band). "

If you've never heard of or seen Rotten Ronnie jigs, come by the store and check them out.

Sunday-May 4, 2008 - 9:18 pm - Kenyon Hill of Norman, Okla., scored his third BASS win with a four-day total of 68 pounds, 0 ounces, on stingy Clarks Hill Lake at the Pride of Georgia. Evers slips to third. You can read the complete story for day three by clicking here.

Sunday-May 4, 2008 - 11:56 am - Edwin Evers of Talala, Okla. still has the lead at the Bassmaster Elite Series event at Clarks Hill in Georgia. Kansan Preston Frazell finished 12th after being in second place in the co-angler competition after the second day when he also had big bass. He's taking $2,000 home for his efforts. The top 12 pros will go at it today for the $100,000 top prize. You can read the complete story for day three by clicking here.

Saturday-May 3, 2008 - 10:58 am - I mentioned last Thursday that local angler Eric Akred won the co-angler and co-angler big bass at the last B.A.S.S weekend series event at Grand Lake on April 26. The total results are posted now and you can see them by clicking here. Two other Kansans placed in the top 20 on the co-angler side.

Friday-May 2, 2008 - 7:01 pm - Edwin Evers of Talala, Okla. has a 2-pound lead at the Bassmaster Elite Series event . The big new for Kansans however is Preston Frazell's move to second place in the co-angler competition. On the way to second, he collected $500 for big bass of the day. You can check the story and see the standings after the first day by clicking here.

Friday-May 2, 2008 - 7:12 am - Denny Brauer is in the lead at the Bassmaster Elite series event being held in Georgia this weekend. You can check the story and see the standings after the first day by clicking here.

Thursday-May 1, 2008 - 3:35 pm - Just found out local angler Eric Akred won the co-angler and co-angler big bass at the last B.A.S.S weekend series event at Grand Lake on the April 26th. I don't know any other details, but I wanted to pass it on. It's always great to hear about tournament sucess by local anglers.

There's a lot going on this month in state parks and for kids this month. Click here for a complete story and listing of events.

Sunday-April 27, 2008 - 1:40 pm - The swimbait furor continues and we keep working to have a good selection. We have another order of the Berkley Hollow Belly baits ordered and I'll let you know when more arrive. If you're lookiing for the weighted hooks to fis them with, be sure to pick some up the next time you're in. We've had a number of customers tell us they haven't been able to find them or the Mend-It for repairing soft plastic baits. We have them both. Come by and see us this week.

Wednesday-April 16, 2008 - 1:33 pm - Just received an email from a blog reader with a couple links to see the Berkley Hollow Belly in action. Check them out. Thanks Dean.

Tuesday-April 15, 2008 - 12:13 pm - Our first order of the all new Berkley® PowerBait® 5" Hollow Belly™ swim bait has arrived. The bait has been field tested and tweaked by the top Berkley Pro's in order to give themselves a significant competitive advantage on this year's tour.

As if the PowerBait® scent and attractant weren't competitive advantage enough all by itself, this new Hollow Belly™ bait is loaded with other features as well that has made it the "choice of champions" when conditions call for a super swim bait.

First of all, unlike most other swim baits on the market, the body is truly hollow from nose to tail, and easily collapses around the hook when bit to insure a solid hookset. Its oversized paddle tail creates an unbelievable, natural swim bait action.

With its realistic eyes, lifelike colors, and soft texture, the Hollow Belly™ truly mimics a live baitfish swimming in its natural environment.

The Powerbait® Hollow Belly™ swim baits come packed with three baits, a wide gap hook, a treble hook, a bullet weight, a swivel, plastic tubing, and a split ring. Also included in the package are diagrams and instructions on how to rig them as a Texas Rig or Open Water Rig.

Sunday, April 13, 2008 - 11:31 am - Tom Spencer is looking for 50 boaters to help take kids fishing in the Third Annual C.A.S.T. event scheduled for later this year. The event is aimed at kids with special needs and this year will also be opened to children of McConnell AFB service men and women currently stationed overseas. This is a chance for you to do some good for a great cause and have some fun at the same time. For more information, email Spencer or visit his website. C.A.S.T. is a national organization with events conducted all around the nation.

Saturday, April 12, 2008 - 9:18 pm - After being kept off the lake Thursday, Bassmaster Elite anglers have had a couple good days of weigh-ins at Lake Amistad. The leader after day two is Jason Williamson from South Carolina. Tomorrow the top 12 anglers will compete for the big purse. Many of the good fish were caught late in the day. Click here for the complete story. The highest placing Kansan was Preston Frazell at 23rd.

Saturday, April 12, 2008 - 9:56 am - We continue to get in new merchandise. Our first shipment of Gene Larew came in yesterday and we're in the process of getting it checked in and ready to go for you. We have all the colors of the new Three Legged Frog. That bait was really praised in the Field and Stream Best Baits article. We also have the Biffle-O and the Super Salt Biffle Craw.

We have a long history with the Gene Larew company going back to the early 80s. Gene Larew's first bait was a salt frog. He passed away years ago and the business has been sold a number of times, but the company continues to be a leader in innovation. Today, they do more than just supply bass anglers with high quality, fish catching baits; they also have a line of crappie baits and saltwater bait. Their Long John was one of the forerunners of today's swimbaits. It didn't sell very well for us in the 80s. I guess it was a bit ahead of the curve.

We hope to get our Larew baits online in the near future for those of you that live out of Wichita.

Thursday, April 10, 2008 - 11:15 am - No need to wonder how the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament is going today on Lake Amistad. It was canceled because of the weather. The plan to let everyone fish the second and thrid day and then cut to the top 12 for day four.

Wednesday, April 9, 2008 - 12:38 pm - We just added a new listing for a 1998 Champion to our customer bulletin board. The owner is getting a new boat and is selling his current one. It's listed on eBay. Click here to go to our customer board listing. If you want to see more photographs, there is a link to his listing on eBay.

Sunday, April 6, 2008 - 8:23 pm - Hold the presses. After leading the Bassmaster Elite event at Falcon Lake for three days, Aaron Martens was leapfrogged by Mississippi's Elias as he Shattered the BASS Record with More Than 130 Pounds in four days. That has to be tough.

Saturday, April 5, 2008 - 8:51 pm - How would you like to weigh in over 100 pounds in three days? Aaron Martens has done just that as he continues his lead at the end of day three of the Bassmaster Elite tournament at Lake Falcon. I'm betting we see more Kansans travel to that lake in the future. I've had several customers tell me they've fished it on their way back from fishing in Mexico. You can read the complete story of day three by clicking here.

Saturday, April 5, 2008 - 10:46 am - An out of town customer has listed some used and new Garcia reels on our customer bulletin board. Check the models he has.

Friday, April 4, 2008 - 9:05 pm - Day two of the Bassmaster Elite Series event on Texas' Lake Falcon wasn't as kind as day one. All three Kansans slipped in the rankings. All Three made the cut to move on to day three fishing however. You can read the complete story by clicking here.

The Riley County Fish & Game Association is hosting a 4 Species Creel Crappie, White Bass Walleye and Channel Cat tournament on May 18, 2008.

Friday, April 4, 2008 - 4:29 pm - The Bassmaster Elite Series is fishing Falcon Lake in Texas this weekend. Aaron Martens is leading with more the 40 pounds weighed in on the first day. He only fished about half of the day because of the wind wearing down his trolling battery.

The three Kansans fishing the event are doing pretty well after the first day. Brent Chapman is in 13th on the pro site while his dad Ron is in second place on the co-angler side. Preston Frazell of Kincaid is in 26th on the co-angler side. You can read the complete story by clicking here.

Wednesday, April 2, 2008 - 8:36 pm - I started to make an entry earlier today about a large order of Bass Magic swim baits we received, but Alex called and said he had already sold all but a couple packages. I thought the order would take care of us for a while, but I was wrong. I will be ordering more tomorrow. I'll let you know when they come in. They've been difficult to get so far this year. I would say they are the "Chatterbait" of 2008. We continue to receive spring merchandise and are working to get it all displayed which is proving to be a problem finding enough space.

Ben called me his evening and said Sonny's truck will be at the store bright and early tomorrow morning with our spring order of Sonny's Dip Bait. If you want five gallon pails, I suggest you call or come in as soon as you can. We ordered more than we did last spring, but we ran out pretty fast last year and had to reorder and have them shipped by private carrier instead of by Sonny's truck.

Also, if you know anyone wanting an 8-foot lighted showcase or you want one for yourself, we still have the one we replaced with our two new show cases. If you collect old lures or anything else for that matter, this would make you a great way to display them if you have the space.

Come by and see us, if we don't have what you need we will do our best to get it for you.
