Angler becomes believer in Bill
Sceffler's Outdoor Guide
Fall 2007 - I
have a lot of interesting events in my life as a result of my
"Deep Hobby". One of the benefits is that I get to
meet a lot of great people from many areas and walks of life.
I recently had a phone call come one day after lunch during my
naptime. The call was from Fred Erbert of Derby. He had my book
and wanted to know what the darkened high peaks were all about,
plus some information about the air clarity. After a lengthy
"clinic by phone" with emphasis on the new moon window
days and clarity of air, he was off to attack the theory at a
"honey hole" he has! During the next few days he called
several times telling about the excitement. I have asked Fred
to be my guest writer for this week. (This all happened during
those beautiful Indian Summer fall days before the cold snapped
arrived). Bill Scheffler
Fred's Story:
I recently purchased a copy of Bill Scheffler's Fishing Guide.
I thumbed through it and will admit that I was a bit skeptical
with talk about negative ions, dust in the air, low fronts, etc.
I thought the fish would bite when it was cloudy.
Then I took a really close look. I decided to try
these theories. Everything was in place. I grabbed my pole and
headed out. Within 20 minutes I hooked a 14lb channel cat. WOW!
This is the biggest fish I've caught. Unfortunately I had something
come up at home, (kids), and had to go home. (Click on photo

After noon, some fishing pole alarms arrived.
I decide to go out again later that afternoon. I set up my poles
right at dusk. Just as I was walking to my car to get a drink
I heard a shrill. It was a bite. I figured it was maybe a pound
or two, as that is what I am used to catching. The line was going
out fast. I clicked the reel and set the hook. I had a huge one
on! I didn't know what to do. I've never hooked one this big
before. With one big pull he snapped my line. What excitement,
then disappointment.
I rehooked and baited thinking "I'll never
have a chance like this again." Now it was dark. I could
see a silhouette of my poles. I was gazing into the skies watching
the stars then I heard that shrill again in the dark. I had another
bite. The excitement of hearing that fish alarm going off in
the dark was something else. I grabbed my pole and set the hook.
A big fish. I played him in and no more got him on the bank and
the alarm on my other pole went off. The excitement was out of
this world. I played him in. A 14 and 15 pounder! I was on cloud
nine. I put both poles back into the water. Twenty-five min.
later I heard the alarm go off in the dark. Another big fish!
I had him for about 30 seconds and he got off. (Click on photo

Now it was time to go home. I was in heaven.
What fun sitting there in the dark and hearing that alarm going
off and having a big fish on the end of the line. This was the
best fishing experience by far of my fifty years! I would not
have gone out if not for reading the guidebook. All those wasted
days sitting there watching my line and having no luck. NO MORE!
Those days are in the past. If not for the book I would have
not gone out that day. Many thanks to Bill Scheffler and I see
many productive days in the future instead of the usual 5 or
6 one-pounders and maybe a 2 or 3 pounder to go with it!
